The Road to Torun (Part 10) – Competition Time, Keeping the Faith & Sharing the Journey.

After months and months of winter training, strength and conditioning sessions and gradual build up back to race fitness, it was time to measure progress at the first competition of the year. That competition was the Scottish Masters Indoor Championships held at the wonderful Emirates Arena in Glasgow.

The full story of how I performed at the championships is covered in this post dedicated to the event, but in short I managed to win two championship gold medals, and I was delighted with my form at this stage in the training programme.

That said, I’m no different to every athlete who wants to go faster and perform better all of the time. However, it would be way too easy to get ahead of my training programme in eagerness to improve level’s of performance ahead of the World Championships. However, timing is everything as it’s not possible to maintain peak performance over a prolonged period of time, thats why they call it peak performance after all. Therefore, training needs to be carefully scheduled to ensure I’m in the best possible shape for the end of March and not the beginning of February. This requires immense discipline and where you must put an awful lot of the faith in your coach and your training plan.

Finally this week, I was asked by a local radio North East station to give an interview around my preparations for the Masters World Championships. The interviewer was fellow Masters Athlete Scott Armstrong and we had a great conversation about all things running whilst shining a light on Masters Athletics, which I always love to promote.

Listen to the interview below:

Until next time …
