A valuable lesson was learned this years British Master Indoors Champs in Sheffield β¦ I deliberately ran, and thought I’d won, a tactical race against fellow M60 Athlete ‘Peter Ilo’ for the bronze medal in the top seeded M60 400m race, only to discover moments later that two of the other athletes in the second seeded race had clocked faster times.Β
I was so focused on my own race that I never paid any attention to the results from the other heats, and subsequently paid the price for racing for a position rather than for a time in a multi race final. To rub salt into the wounds just one week earlier at the Scottish Indoor Championships I’d ran the first lap 2 seconds quicker, and there was a very good chance I could have gone faster in Sheffield should I have pushed for a time. Albeit in athletics along with much of life, ‘could’ is a very big word!
Every cloud has a silver lining though, as whilst it would have been better not to make this mistake at all, I’ll not make the same mistake again, and it was better to make it then rather than at the world championships in 5 weeks.
Congratulations to π₯ Richard White, π₯ Michael Vassiliou and π₯ Colin Edwards on their podium places. πππ
Staying with the British Masters, whilst I only chose to compete in the 400m, here are recordings of two more great races in the 200m and the 60m :
Congratulations to π₯ Michael Vassilou, π₯ Neil Tunstall and π₯ Peter Ilo on their podium places in the 200m. πππ
Congratulations to π₯ Pat Logan, π₯ Michael Vassilou and π₯ Mark Woods on their podium places in the 60m. πππ
Thank you to Masters Athletics UK for the organisation and to all the officials and helpers.

Yes itβs tough when you have to βmanageβ two races Stuart. Similar thing for me in the M55 but although I did put full effort in I would have loved the guys with faster times in the other heat to have been in my race to aim for
